One thing I know is that system synergy has a really big effect on tube preference, so that would explain the "go figure". As far as the Brimar goes, I too thought they were "okay", found them to be warm, but a little slow, and only okay with resolution.
I have gotten into designing my own line stages (relatively simple to build), and find that tube curves don't lie, so have moved on from the 12AU7. More linear tubes, like my current fave, the Russian 6N6P, also have a lower RP as well, a win/win situation.
