The original Northern Electric was the Canadian sibling of Western Electric for Canadian Bell. Lots of corporate stuff and divestiture happened, leaving them as Northern Telecom and later Nortel (not Norelco, which is a Philips brand). Nortel went bankrupt in 2009 and spun off assets.
