It's realistic in that it takes a long time for any tube to sound its best. It's not realistic to wait for that until use or doing anything other than just using them to "burn them in". Basically tubes deteriorate as they operate and they are commonly designed for a 10000 hour life. So there is a bell curve of operational stability for them and as soon as they burn-in, they start to burn-out. The good news is that it's such a long, slow process that you can't hear the changes beyond the first few hours and the last few. The middle portion is the long, sweet period of "normal" operation. All tubes behave this way, short of the unpredictable failures.
