Why 6A3 ?

67.85.131.36

Well, the 6A3 has an inverted 'W' filament vs a cathode of the 6A5. I understand a performance edge may exist with direct filament.

Buying tubes from large dealers with regard to the 6B4G octal socket may result in the horror story of that odd tetrode (6AV5?) tube wired as a triode. I also understand a newer version 6B4G is not in G glass- no romance here. Additionally, some four digit tube sub for the 6B4G exists and is of different construction.

The Sovtek 6B4G is not a true 6A3 and some report not as good sounding as US NOS. I cannot imagine the Sovtek would not sound good though. At $129 per pair I'll pass. Also, no interest in the Russian 6B4S.

Next, is I may sub 45s as a perference. My amps use a seperate filament transformer & is easy to swap out to 2.5 volt. The plate voltage is 250 VDC with fixed bias adjustable for both the 6A3 or 45 tube.

I could not find eight matching tubes. I did find four Sylvania 6A3 dark grey plate & four Sylvania 6A3 black plate. Although I only needed four, why not buy eight for twice as much! Ha, ha.
