801A is the real business!! Superb tube. Good as an input tube or a driver tube or both. Have a look at the thread "26 pre amp" over on DIY AUdio which has numerous schematics and details of filament supplies - Rod COleman's boards are good and cheap.
I'm currently favouring grid battery bias - I believe Kevin Carter also has a schematic for a 26 preamp on the K&K site. Thomas Mayer uses 801A in filament bias which can also be good but more hard work.
The first task is to find an interstage that works really well with it. Hammond 126C works and sounds OK but you can probably find a better Lundahl one like LL1660, LL1692A. Shoot for about 10mA which should give you better inductance. You need 100 Henries or over. I'd be interested myself in a really good interstage. I'd use 1:1 as a driver for a 300B SET and you could also use that as a preamp output as long as leads were short.
I only use DHTs in my system - consequently you need 3 or 4 stages. One should be a 26!
