I don't know why so many run the tubes so hard. Run them no aggressively and get some nice life out of them. I will admit though that I run my 27's in my preamp at max ratings because it truly sounds better. While not a power tube, I have seen premaps running tubes at a ratings that shortened their life. The Quicksilver Full Preamp did. The tubes would sound great for about a week and then get dull. Mike admitted that he ran them hard in that preamp.
Look at the older VTL's and the plate voltage Manley used. But I didn't like the printed circuit board he used either.
