Actually, the 12AT7 heater takes 150mA at 12.6 volts, just like the 12AX7. Otherwise it is quite different, with about half the mu, 2.5 times the transconductance and one-fifth the plate resistance. Would give less gain, but require quite a different circuit design as already pointed out. For less gain, try an attenuator between preamp and amp.
