Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
It's just now coming up on hour 6.5 of "burn-in" for my new Jolida JD 5T preamp (currently enjoying the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin--BWV 1001-1006--with Sigiswald Kuijken). Already, it's sounding quite nice!
When it arrived today, I was so excited to start hearing it that I didn't bother to open up the chassis for a look inside. Someone else who recently purchased one of these did open his up, and found Tung-Sol tubes (2 x 12AX7). For the moment, I'm assuming this is what's inside mine, but I'll probably call Jolida to find out.
This is my first bit of tube gear, so I'd appreciate some advice on care & feeding, tube rolling, etc.
When I turn off the unit, it goes into "standby" mode. Does this keep the tubes warm? Or should I still expect to give the tubes time to properly warm up once I put the unit into full "on" mode? If the unit is on, and the tubes are warmed up, do they continue to "burn-in" even if there's no music playing?
While I intend to keep these original tubes in long enough to really get to know what they sound like, I'm sure I'll want to experiment with other tubes as well. To this end, I'd like to commence the collection of various tube pairs. I've recently been reading here (and before this, at the Grant Fidelity site) about the Psvane 12AX7 tubes. It seems these might be likely candidates to occupy a place in such a collection. I'd love to know of any others you could enthusiastically recommend as well!
Thanks!
