When they're right, I've always considered the Ei the best in breed for systems needing a TFK smooth plate on a budget. I've still got about a dozen on hand.
It's not a smooth plate. A smooth plate is more refined and complete at what it does well, production tolerance was spectacular, and it really lasts almost forever. The Ei does not last forever. And the production variance was troubling, requiring screening. But it gets close enough in so many attributes that it was at one time a budget king, and embarrassed a lot of other new production in my listening.
Then the war, then the quality . . . pity.
