I find the best NOS tubes (like my favorite 9 pin Amperexes) are actually livlier and more harmonically complex than the typical Russian tubes. The thing about them is that they do this while being smoother, more liquid and with little or no grain or texture to the sound. This sense of electronic texture, so fine it cant really be discerned as grain per se, combined with a lack of harmonic complexity characteristic of real life are the things I hate about all the current production tubes I've heard. Its almost as though the performers are comprised of extremely fine grained carefully sculpted bursts of noise...
It's hard to describe the difference, but when you hear it - WOW! The sense of connection to actual performers and the sense of musical ebb & flow is simply more real at a root level...
