Oh, didn't realize there were 12AX7. What I said still applies--there are a number of tubes in that unit to consider. I would not have made the rectifier the focus of a sonic makeover, especially as you are employing RCA cleartops--not my first choice in the 12AU7 area.
While RCA 5814 have not been my favorite preamp tube, in a Cary phonopre I set up for a friend, the RCA 5814 were the best of the inexpensive tubes I had on hand. They were somewhat better than the GE 5814, which were pretty good as well. If it had been my personal unit I would have put in some CBS or Raytheon old 5814 to see what they would do. You might want to try some of those, starting with the cheaper ones and working up. You might find synergy on a budget like I did with the RCA 5814.
Do a search on the 12AX7 candidates here if you haven't already. I think people have commented that some of the Russians--Tung-Sol and/or Sovtek (can't recall?) were very quiet tubes.
If your unit uses the EA7/EM7 tube like mine, make sure it is up to snuff too. If that was getting old it would darken the sound.
