Interesting, thanks. The Manley amps that I retubed operate in Triode or Tetrode mode via toggle switch. The amps came from the factory with EL34's but recently Manley has been recommending the 6CA7-EH from Electro-Harmonix.
They're sounding pretty nice so far! But it could just be that the 6CA7-EH are new and my EL34's may have been going soft over the years. I'll be playing music through them all day and monitoring bias while I work in the adjacent basement office.
TheTubeStore.com website describes the 6CA7-EH as:
"Designed to the exacting specifications of the Philips 6CA7 tube, this classic tetrode returns to life in a big bottle design. The 6CA7-EH is built to withstand today's high-gain amps while still retaining the detailed tone and component integrity of the original. A direct replacement, with military reliability, for any EL34."
In years past, I would assume that to mean a "military" tube that went through more rigorous testing and selection. Was the Philips 6CA7 in fact a "rugged" tube? And I wonder how a modern equivalent would hold up in comparison. There's probably no clear cut answer but I'm hoping the 6CA7-EH's last a while. It was a rather pricey retube with 10 per amp! (Plus a few spare).
