Does your unit have hefty iron in it? I have heard trannies make noise while they are charging up from dead cold. Prolly part of the interaction of establishing the electro-magnetic field around the units. Once charged, the changes in that EM field maybe a small percentage compared to the initial charge-up. Therefore, they stay quiet during use.
Just a WAG, but I've heard this before. In both PT and/or OPT at times.
