They are the best 12au7 variant I've tried-not that I've tried them all. Detailed, articulate and balanced without etch or glare. I haven't compared them to regular Brimar 12AU7's, so I don't know if there is a significant difference between the two. I like the 13D5's a little better than the CBS-Hytron 5814, which sounds a bit slow and congested in comparasson (we are talking SLIGHT differences). Either is better than any 12au7 I've tried. As always, YMMV.
