My intent is not to dispute what Kevin Deal asserts, mainly as he is much more knowledgable about tubes than I am; but I had SED 6L6s in my preamp, and found them unrefined compared to RCAs and a couple of KT66s that I tried. I now use NOS GEC KT66s (got a really good price on a matched pair), but that is another matter entirely. The RCAs and KT66s were all NOS, but not stratospherically expensive. I am a firm believer in paying a premium for long-life NOS tubes. The pleasure that you derive from the quality of sound that you get is actually cheap if you look at it as $/hr. of listening time. I have yet to find a new tube that compares with the better NOs. Yikes, that's a helluva bold statement. Remember, I am not saying that there aren't new tubes that are competitive, just that, in my relatively limited experience, I haven't heard one.
