***This tube is notoriously variable in quality.

No, it is not. Based on many thousands of pieces used, the reject rate is as close to zero as it gets (1 or 2%) and field replacement rates are super low - no more than 4% a year.

If used properly, it is one of the most reliable tubes in existance. Sample-to-sample variations are not greater than for any other production tube.

***British makers who use it burn in the ones they put in their amps to make sure they are stable

Stability is NOT a problem with that tube.

***and reckon on as much as one in three rejection rate to get premium stock.

We don't know what that means.

***First I'd try to establish the rejection rate used, and then factor that into the pricing.

I think the pricing (actually it is pretty good from all these sources) simply reflects the very limited market for this tube in the US. The suppliers don't sell any large quantities to OEM, so all their sales are low volume onsies-toosies. We are the largest consumer of this tube in the US (to the best of my knowledge), but we buy them direct and our volumes don't affect the US prices.

So - good supply and no market to speak off. Result - no cohesive pricing. Use the lowest cost source - they all come from the same place.
