In my previous msg, "preamp mix" referred to mix of tubes.With respect to your KT90 question, When I used them I found them to have warmth and a nice musical nature, however not everyone has found them to be quite as pleasing. Of course, YMMV.
The Svetlana 6550C could be a good tube for you as they are definitely not bright by nature, but I think that the KT90 has a more detailed presentation. The Svetlana KT88 works very well for me, but given your experience with the British tubes, I think that there is a chance that they might also prove to be a touch lean, perhaps bright.
