6X5GT and 6V6GT are both easily available and inexpensive. The Grommes is also much "easier" on tubes than guitar amps and the 6V6 output tubes should have a long life.The 6V6 was used heavily in table radios and guitar amps. It saw far less use in audio gear, and primarily appears in console sets and smaller integrated amps like the Grommes and Bell products.
As for sound, properly restored the amp is a bit lush, soft in the bass and enjoyable. A nice setup for a bedroom or office to replace a radio, but I wouldn't want it for a primary system.There are a few links to tube vendors off of my web page, all of which should have both in stock.
