I suspected that was what you were talking about. This is not my favorite scheme. You end up having many components sitting at high voltage, many of them at voltages HIGHER than their normal working voltages. You may exceed the working voltages of some components whis way.It usually takes over 50mA or so to create an arc, so that switch still might arc in process - many output stages work at higher bias currents. In addition, when the switch is open, it still sees full plate voltage applied to it.
You can disconect the output stage this way, but the rest remains powered up.
I still think that cutting the AC voltage to the rectifier is the right way to do it. It is not hard at all and gives you the safest way to achieve the standby. Depending upon the voltages involved, it maybe more or less difficult to find the relay with sufficient voltage rating, but the relay's AC rating is always higher than the DC one.
