I have the AES AE-3 preamp... I originally decided to build it myself as my first kit amp. If we leave sonics out and just focus on ease of assembly (which is what I think you really wanted to know about), I don't think I would recommend the AE-3 kit for a first time builder... if you are hamfisted at all, then the very small chassis of the AE-3 will be a hinderance. this is probably a kit for more seasoned builders... but if you are patient and are a little better at working in small tight spaces than I, then the AE-3 would be fine and shouldn't pose a problem.... the AE-3 is a great little preamp and when you do a few mods to it, it really shines and is one of the better pieces of gear that I have had in my system... not the best, but certainly not the worst.... I enjoy it a lotas far as sonics, there are many issues to deal with because one is based on 6sn7 octals (AE-3) and the other is based on a 9pin mini (Foreplay).... both tubes have different sonic signatures, replacement tubes are of varying price, etc. etc.....
just a few things to think about....
