Difference which stage tube lies?

199.228.142.8

I'm a newbie so forgive me if I don't ask this question correctly...

Does it matter (i.e. does it affect the sound) in which stage a power amplifier contains its tubes?

In other words, most tube power amplifiers use power tubes like 6550 or EL34, etc. in the (is it...) driver stage, no?

But then, there are power amplifiers like the new Musical Fidelity amp that uses transistors in the driver stage and the Nuvistor tube in the output stage, right?

So, what different characteristics exist between a power amp using, say, 6550s versus the MF amp using the Nuvistor tube. Or does it not matter because if the power amp is designed correctly, both tubes should impart the same characteristics of a tubes, regardless of the type of tube or its location in the amp?

I hope that made sense.
