"unless I learn unequivocally that the information I've been supplied is false, I have no reason to believe that the tube "eating" phenomenon isn't avoidable."Since it is clear that you do not own the preamp, I would avoid make a blanket statement such as this. Of course the dealer is going to tell you that the preamp is not hard on tubes, did you expect the dealer to tell you otherwise (As a side note, every AI dealer I have spoken to has said that the Modulus is not hard on tubes)? A number of owners (including myself), have witnessed first-hand how this preamp eats tubes. In my experience with this preamp, I have went through a lot of NOS tubes, more than I care to state.
If you are willing to stick with the stock Sovteks, the tubes may go a longer way. But if you decide to roll tubes, all I can say in my experience is watch out, because you may end up wasting a lot of money, like I did."Also, he recommended occasionally "tapping" the tubes to remove build-up on the cathodes. [Note: He indicated that these two things greatly extend tube longevity.]"
I have a very hard time believing that this would help increase tube life.
You may want to ask for Staephen's advice concerning tubes/tube-life with the Modulus, because he seems to have a lot of first-hand experience with it. BTW, I still own mine, and really like it, except for the tube-eating.
