Every preamp circuit, source>preamp>amp>speaker chain is different so you just don't know quite what will happen when you drop something in from my limited experience. RCA Cleartops have very good clarity, Mullards have smooth midrange,etc.Generally, the characteristics noted about a tube seem to be present-it just sort of depends on how they integrate, or not, with the rest of the system.
