Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |
|
Hi,
A tube noob here with a small question regarding the tubes used in my pre/headphone amp. It is a Single-Ended Class A Tube Amplifier with Output Transformer which uses a 5AR4 rectifier along with 2 6DE7 driver tubes. I was able to find numerous information regarding 5AR4 substitutes (such as GZ34), but there seems to be a lack of discussion regarding these 6DE7 driver/power tubes.
So I have a few questions before I start my very first tube-rolling journey:
1) Are there any tubes types that can be used as a direct substitute to the 6DE7?
2) If not, should I search for certain brand/year for these 6DE7s?
3) What exactly does a power/driver tube do? Does the type of tube I use make a difference in SQ?
4) Which tube change - rectifier or the power tubes - would make a bigger change in SQ?
I apologize for such elementary questions. And thank you all in advance for your help and advice. It is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Dave
