Re: ampex preamp

WP

My preamp is the light tan faced one as seen in the Sams Photofact. I have also never seen an ad for this preamp. I'm remodeling my listening room now and can't locate the catalog (!), but it's the 1962 Allied catalog. It will resurface eventually, but there's not much in the ad in the catalog beyond the features and functions of the preamp which you can figure out from the Sams. It's called the Ampex Audio Control Center. Give me an e-mail and I'll send you a scan of the page when it turns up. The most interesting thing is the price of around $180, when you could buy a Dynakit for a fraction of that, and the price of the Marantz which was just over $200 and came with an electronic crossover and a wooden case. The Ampex 402 is pictured in the Sams (and the Allied catalog) in a bare louvered metal chassis. Mine has a maple wooden case that appears to have been custom made, and it's not mentioned as optional or included in the catalog. I've never seen or even heard of the later silver faced versions you mention, and none of the Ampex sites online have any info on any these preamps. I believe the catalog pictured the power amps Ampex made at that time too. This was a very expensive preamp at the time, probably aimed at the professional recording studio. While the build quality is very good , it's not quite near the quality of the Ampex pro tape recorders of that same time. I inspected a 351 transport once, and it looked like a Rolls Royce inside. I took a pass on it becasue it had mono heads and no electronics. Ampex has quite a mistique going for it because of the pro tape recorders.
