Re: First Tube Failure

I suppose you would need to find someone locally who has a tester and could check them for you or buy a tester that isn't prone to taking out a part of the tester if a tube is bad. Maybe a Sencore, solid state unit. They are relatively cheap and rarely fail due to a malfunctioning tube.

I think it would be relatively uncommon for a tube that is operating properly in your amp to suddenly fail in your Hickock. Just double check the settings before testing it. You might simply keep track of the hours on your tubes and get in the habbit of replacing them after 1500 hours or so.

Tubes progressively weaken with use just as a lightbulb does and when it decides to let go, it just goes. But, they do so far more often toward the end of their rated life than the center portion. I've generally found tubes that survive the first 100 hours of use will behave themselves for the next 1500 hours or so.
