Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Ultra Low Noise E88CC

I only have 6 mos of experience with 6922s, but I've been trying the tubes in a MC headamp (ARC MCP33) going into an ARC PH3, so all the hiss is totally and too audible.

There does not appear to be a correlation with tube tube. Its individual tubes that can be quiet.

The tube that is consistently quiet is the Russian 6H23-EV = 6922EH. NOT THE SOVTEK 6922.

My PH3 came with 3 Siemens E88CC. These had been selected by the Parts Connextion when they upgraded the PH3. These are very quiet. but cost a bomb if you want selected ones.

Upscale Audio's Platinum grade EH 6922s are $25/tube, and as quiet. Not as good sounding as the Siemens tho, but not bad in the phono stage, pretty close. I did not like the sound in the line stage of the preamp tho.

But, most of other EH6922 and 6H23 I have (all used from ARC line stages, or ebay) are quiet too.

Not one of the used Amperex's I've gotten are quiet enough for the MCP. The Bugle boys were the worst. The PQ was not good either.

3 of 6 used Siemens e88cc were quiet. 1 Siemens E188cc of 4 was quiet enough for the MCP33.

I have 4 used 6DJ8s, 'made in the USSR', no other branding. These came out of my ARC D70 power amps. They were very quiet, and sound better than the EH 6922. But, I've never seen any more of these in my ebay hunting.

Besides Upscale Audio, RAM labs also grades tubes by noise. So does Audio Research, but you'll likely get Sovteks from them, so don't.

I'll try Tungsram one of these days. Samir.
