Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

I love the sound of mercury vapor rectifiers (blows away tube or semiconductor diodes)but I had always assumed (foolishly?) that they needed to be mounted vertically. The 83 tube data says so but I understand from reading past postings that a tube tester lays the 83 on its side.Is it safe for me to assume that I can run say an RG1-250 or an 866a on its side or upside down?
I had always assumed that the reason that mercury rectifiers had to be vertical upright is that mercury will cool on the glass and run down into the bottom of the tube were it will be duly heated and turned into vapor. Is this an unsound assumption?
Can someone well versed with running MV rectifers (preferably upside down!) give me some light and guidance.
Andy
