I agree. I do not hear huge differences between tubes either.
The 6CA7 is supposed to be more rugged than the EL34, but it probably was more true years ago than today. The line between tubes and their rugged versions is very blurred today. The 12AX7/5751 is a small signal case in point.
I lightly tap on tubes I'm testing with a pencil. Regardless of the type, they are all close when it comes to microphonics using this unscientific test. Different frequencies will excite resonances at different points in them though, I'm sure.
I don't understand why these companies cannot make consistently good tubes. It's pathetic that the tubes made 50 years ago are more reliable.
Oh well, you play the hand you're dealt I guess.
