Hi,I've experimented quite a bit with alternative tubes for my S6. The sad news is that none of the matched sextets I purchased came anywhere near to the original EH provided by Unison. Even a brand new EH34 matched sextet from the "local" German tube online shop gives less detail and sounds bloated. I haven't figured out what exactly is the reason but my guess is that Unison matches not only current but also other factors (slew rate?). Maybe they also provide valves with parameters that fit exactly the S6's requirements.
Of the ones I tested the JJs were terrible (bloated, bass-heavy, intransparent) and the Svetlana ("winged c") were actually quite OK but above all no progress compared to the original tubes.
The only remaining issue is that a set of original Unison tubes costs around 300 Euro which I find a bit steep (street price for a matched sextet EL34 EH is around 60 Euros here). But from my experience the 240 Euro extra a definitely well spent if you want to make use of the S6's full potential.
If you have any new insights into this please let us know.
