lightly misted with water, not wet. Available from Digi-Key for about $4 and smaller ones are in supermarkets.
It's a textured microfiber pile cloth that looks like carpet under magnification. An outstanding product and it makes tubes shine.
Your naptha method sounds scary but if it works, it works.
