I usually measure plate voltage with a new rectifier, and often find that tubes yielding the exact same B+ voltage will sound very different. DC behavior only tells part of the story. Dynamic impedance of the rectifier, in addition to any electrical/mechanical self-noise that it introduces, can play a role in defining its "sound". These are measurable effects, but few hobbyists have the time, equipment, or desire to do so. So we are forced to go by ear -- no magic, but it can seem that way!
