Re: 5814 recommendations?

Hi,
As usual, depends on the sound you are after. Best 5814's I have ever heard in the first stage of my power amp are early 1950's Raytheon, and second best is the CBS 5814 - again pre 1960. The early Raytheons are a bit rare, but fabulous tubes. The CBS are more common and almost as good. I'd say the Raytheon is a bit more refined, the CBS very powerful sounding. You can often find the CBS in the $40-$50 per pair range, the Raytheons are similar, but again, much rarer. I prefer both to any other 12au7 variant I have ever heard in my amp. Amperex 7316 is nice as well, but I prefer these two. You'll have to experiment. Either of these should be better than the GE's you were listening too in my opinion. Good luck.
