Sylvania 12AT7

REL54,

Yes, in the right situation, the older Sylvania 12AT7s I've tried have all had a noticeable depth while not giving up clarity and natural timbre. I use 2-12AT7s in a microphone preamp- which is very revealing- and these Sylvanias are, as you mention, also very quiet. Once I discovered these 1958 Air Force triple mica, black plate, square getter 12AT7WAs had this depth, I tried some other Sylvania 12AT7s and eventually bought both more of that model and the Gold Brand 6201 of which I have both gold and steel pin examples. The GB-6201 has gotten more expensive lately- every premium tube seems to have taken off for the sratosphere- but a few months ago I bought 6 of the mid-50's,gold print 12AT7WA's testing NOS for only $30.

I also use triple mica, black plate Sylvanias 5751s in the mic pre and that's another tube Sylvania definitly got right. My old Dynaco ST70 also has "fat bottle 6CA7s- another nice Sylvania. Another one I like are old Sylvania square getter 12AX7s labelled for organ use. I realy am never disappointed with Sylvanias and the prices are about the last that seem reasonable -except the 5751.

Over time, I've come to learn what you mention about a particular mkaer excelling in a particular tube and for example, Amperex is in my view the top of the 12AU7s as well as the 6DJ8 family.

Cheers,

Bambi B
