RCA 6N7 and/or 6N7GT in place of RCA 6SN7 (VT-231)

Has anyone used these pre-6SN7 in a preamp? The 6N7 is made of metal in the 1930s. It has a higher Mu, around 40. What did they sound like? This is the same octal base as the 6SN7, is it not?
