I've had bad luck with EL-34's over the years. I buy top quality ones, but it does not seem to matter. Hopefully my luck will change because I know it is a good sounding tube, although maybe a little overrated.
In one of my amps I set the bias at 35 mA. The other is autobias which sets them on the high side at about 50-55 mA.
