I have in a 3/5 combo, FWIW

Whether I liked the 6550 vs the KT88 (both SED's) depended a lot on the sonic's of my source. In my opinion the KT88 has a slightly enhanced upperbass which is a bit soft in comparison to the 6550 which is, if anything, a bit deeper and certainly tighter. I found the KT88 to have a bit more sparkle in the upper mids and the 6550 a bit rolled off/soft. Not a big deal, but both issues can make or break the overall sound combo of the PL's and your source. I have one source that is outstanding with the KT88's and another that is much better with 6550's (or even EL34's in the PL1).

If your source is relatively neutral if you like 'color the KT88's are it. If you like a sense of coolness, and perhaps clearer/smoother detail that is what you are likely to hear. YMMV.
