The 12ay7 is a very nice front end tube, but these Allied units are full of ceramic disc capacitors which are sonic detractors. Some of the kits that are printed circuit have very small footprint for these ceramic caps. So upgrading to quality capacitors is rather sloppy with seldom enough room without standing the new cap on end. The higher quality capacitors are MUCH larger. Also Allied engineers tried to use grid leak bias in a number of places to reduce parts count.
