I leave my solid state amps on 24/7. I have a tube pre-amp.
1) What is the downside?
If you are running NOS tubes from the 50s, or 60s it will be the cost and availability. Small 9 pin tubes life expectancy is about 10,000 hrs. New 9 pin tubes of today is much less than that at least the 6922 tubes from my experience.2) How may I leave the amps on but turn the pre off?
It depends if the preamp has a mute function and the design of the mute circuit of the preamp. If in the mute position the outputs of the preamp are shunted then you should be able to mute the preamp and then shut down the preamp without causing a transient spike through the inputs of the power amp/s, and thus not causing the dreaded loud pop through the speakers.3) How quickly does this use up the tubes, power and rectifier?
