Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Siemens CCa

The problem with all the HK tube reviews I've read are that their reviewers inevitably pick the oldest, rarest, and/or most expensive tube as the best.

This is what I know about the vintages (or at least what I think I know :P):
Ccas with A12, A13, and A14 *acid etching* (on glass) are the early 60s with gray "plates/frame/shield/support" (as far as I know, this particular part that is absent in early Siemens serves no electrically functional purpose ... hence, the hazy references/names). These early Ccas are the A2 design. My guess is the earlier D getters would be the A1 design.

With each design revision, the internal stamped code changes (A3, A4, A5, ad naseum). A3 and A4 seem to have very similar - if not the same - internal construction as the earlier A2 (early 60s version). The only difference I see is that the A3 and A4 design have a shiny "plate/frame/shield/support" between the top and bottom mica. Both have O/halo getters with a thick getter dimpled/grooved support rod. Later generations (A5 and later) use thinner getter supports or A-frames with halo or disk getters.

All in all, I find A1 to A4 all sound excellent. A5 and later don't sound quite as good, but they're still good tubes.
