you've just had the shot fired over the bow, so to speak. A 1000mf/40v cap is pretty easy to find so that will be the easy part. The question is how many more are right behind it.The symptoms you describe are indicative of the power supply cap failure. I'd suggest you not operate it until its been looked at by a compentent bench tech.
If it were in my hands, I'd recommend a full restoration of at least the parts that need to make it safe to operate.
