Re: Sylvania 5881's

The 5881 or 6L6GWB was introduced by Ting-Sol in the early 1950, 1952 I think, as the first ugrade of the 6L6 and almost a completely resdesigned tube. While audio uses were mentioned the tube was primarily a "control" tube used to trigger relays in aircraft and such. The control system of the original B-52s featured these bottles. The original TS issue featured carbon coated plates, gold grid wires, and rigid alignment of the beam forming plates.

Unless you're careful to ensure how much "work" your amp want to get from a tube you cannot replace the GC with these GBs - they will redplate.

As to their sonic qualities I've always seen them resported as "strident" altough in a guitar amplifier I don't notice the difference - they "sound like 6L6s."
