Rumor has it that these "secret" codes, as opposed to specific date codes, were used just to stop complaints from consumers, who kept asking radio/TV set manufacturers "why my radio/TV made in 1965 is equipped with tubes made in 1960?"This sounds very funny, but very many naive consumers back then seemed to believe "the newer, the better" even in the case of radio/TV tubes, as if they were perishables like fresh meat or produce.
Now we all know that's quite opposite in the world of tubes--"The older, the better."
