The Leak Stereo 20 is very sensitive and the VariSlope preamp was designed to cater for that. If your input signal is at line level, e.g. from a tuner or CD player, then you don't need any gain from preamplification - in fact, you need attenuation!You can't draw any general conclusions from your experience, IMHO, given the poor design of Leak preamps and the unusually high sensitivity of their amps. Another brand could give the opposite result.
