I have used both. The passive is fine as long as you don't need the gain and the volume control is low impedance or you have a short cable run.I had a system for a while using a passive preamp and tended to have the volume wide open once in a while, so I took it out and patched the phono preamp directly to the amp now and then. It sounded better that way.
