Passive Vs valve pre amp??

I just swapped my Leak Varislope Valve pre-amp for a passive Nean Valley pre amp. This is really, little more than a switcher box but has completely opened up my Leak Stereo 20, which now sounds way more musical with more detail, improved tops and bottoms, greater seperation and better soundstage. This is with both CD's and vinyl and next to the Gram pre-amp for my phono stage, is the single best improvement I've had since buying the Leak.

It appears to be against everything I have previously led to believe ie valves are best at all stages. However, the theory here is that there is no gain from the pre amp and consequently less inteferance between the source and the power amp; which should do all the work anyway. Does anyone esle have similar experience???
