Having owned several 300 series Ampex's in the past, yes, you are correct ... there are plenty of 6SN7's inside.But, the 6SN7 originated in 1939 as a Television vertical-deflection amplifier, which was 10 years before the Ampex 300 was introduced.
It just so happens to work well in audio circuits, too.
