Some "integrated amps" such as my Conrad-Johnson CAV-50, have what is called a "passive pre-amp" (attenuator) when used separately. In the days when the main, even the only, signal input was a phono, you needed a pre-amp to boost the signal. Nowadays only lunatics (such as found here [grin]) listen to vinyl. The "line-level" pre-amp is now in vogue. One advantage of separate components is you can mix and match as this hobby slowly drains your bank account and your sanity. Enjoy!
