Thanks. I've read a reasonable amount online about tube matching, but haven't seen your point about the effect for SETs - focus tends to be on issues with current draw on PP amps - so a bit suprised that tube matching issues can affect volume. I'd also got the impression that as tubes age then distortion and narrowing of frequency range issues occur, but not actual output power.Have seen it mentioned that the tube testers people talk about on their ebay auctions are not much use for predicting how tubes will match in an actual amp under those usage conditions.
If the alternative is buying tubes until I get a reasonable match then a balance control start to look a reasonable option.
