Outside of the RATHER/EXPENSIVE boutique types mentioned below (those rare Siemens, the Telefunkens) RCA cleartops are indeed nice and cheap. FWIW, while the Phillips ECG 12AX7WA is horrible, they made a reasonable 12au7/6189, as you are hearing. Many people like Tungsrams; Conus Audio has them for a good price and also the Tesla version of Telefunken's ECC802S. That Tesla is very nice and $30 each. That Telefunken ECC802S IS great but IMHO not worth the $. If $ is no object, go for it! Don't neglect earlier blackplate RCAs either; they tend to be noisy so you will need to either buy selected stock or buy more than you need on ebay and dump the noisy ones. Really, the "special" Valvo, Telefunken, etc 12AU7s are just too damn expensive for the level of improvement--just my opinion, shared by few, I suspect! RCA 6189s can be very nice. Avoid the 5814 of any brand; I have never heard one I liked; many people disagreee, but I really have tried this tube in EVERYTHING and it just sounds.... wrong. Finally, the Brimar 13D5 has a GREAT reputation, and isn't expensive. Finally standard Telefunken 12AU7s (get the ribbed plate one) and Amperex HOLLAND 12AU7/ECC82 are great.
